Tattoo & Piercing Aftercare Read The Aftercare Instructions

AFTERCARE FOR YOUR TATTOO

  • Wash your hands with soap and water!
  • Remove bandages 2-3 hours after tattoo is finished.
  • Wash your new tattoo every 2-3 hours for the next 3-4 days with anti-bacterial soap only.
  • Pat the tattoo dry with a clean, dry towel. Do not rub.
  • Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment (such as A&D Ointment, Tattoogoo, or Recovery Salve) after each washing for 5–7 days.
  • After 7 days you can switch it to unscentedlotion, (curel or lubriderm) continue use until fully healed.
  • Do not soak your tattoo in a bathtub, hot tub, sauna, or swimming pool while it is healing.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds while your tattoo is healing. If you will be in the sun for an extended period after healing, use SPF 30–50 sunscreen.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or rub your tattoo while it is healing. Wear loose-fitting clothing over the area.
  • Keep pets away from your tattoo as much as possible, as pet hair and dander can increase the risk of infection.
  • Healing times vary from person to person. Contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare provider if you notice signs of infection, such as increasing redness, green or yellow discharge, excessive swelling, or fever.

SANIDERM REMOVAL & REAPPLICATION (2ND BANDAGE)

  • To remove Saniderm, find an edge of the bandage and pull it back over itself in the direction of hair growth. Showering is the ideal way to remove Saniderm. Running warm water will help loosen the adhesive and relax the skin, making removal more comfortable. Dry removal may cause discomfort and additional trauma to the skin.
  • Discard the used bandage and wash the tattoo with a mild soap, preferably fragrance-free.
  • Allow the tattoo to air dry or pat dry with a clean towel.
  • If desired, apply a thin layer of aftercare product to your tattoo. If you have naturally oily skin or live in a humid climate, you may skip this step. Otherwise, apply a thin layer of petroleum-free moisturizer to help retain moisture and reduce itching. If you plan to apply another bandage, apply the product only to the tattoo and avoid the surrounding skin. Saniderm does not adhere well to wet or moisturized skin.
  • Apply a second bandage by following the application steps above.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Keep the second bandage on for 3–6 days, with the full 6 days being ideal. If the skin becomes irritated, fluid builds up, or the bandage starts coming off, it is okay to remove it sooner.
  • Do not apply any additional bandages after the scabbing/flaking stage of healing has begun. If the tattoo is uncovered during this phase, keep it clean and well moisturized.
  • If adhesive residue remains on the skin, or the adhesive is difficult to remove with water, coconut oil or baby oil can help loosen and remove it.

AFTERCARE FOR YOUR PIERCING

WHAT TO DO:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
  • Clean your piercing 2–3 times daily with sterile saline solution or a mild antibacterial soap.
  • Pat dry using sterile gauze or a clean paper towel. Do not use a cloth towel.
  • For oral piercings, rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash or sterile saline solution for 30–60 seconds, 2–3 times per day, and after eating, drinking, or smoking.
  • Wear clean clothing and use fresh bedding while healing.

AVOID THE FOLLOWING:

  • Touching, twisting, or playing with your piercing.
  • Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Betadine, and ointments.
  • Over-cleaning your piercing.
  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and other bodies of water.
  • Oral contact and rough physical activity (when applicable).
  • Beauty products (makeup, lotions, hair products) near the piercing.
  • Excessive alcohol, nicotine, and recreational drug use.

IMPORTANT:

  • Do not remove the jewelry if you suspect an infection. Removing it can trap the infection.
  • Do not pick away dried lymph or crust. This is a normal part of the healing process.
  • Piercings heal from the outside inward and may appear healed before they actually are.
  • If you experience severe swelling, increasing redness, green/yellow discharge, fever, or other signs of infection, contact your piercer or a healthcare professional.
